According to legend, Ba Den was a kind-hearted and beautiful young woman who lived in what is now Tay Ninh. She had a pure heart and often helped others. Her beauty and virtue attracted the admiration of many suitors.
However, she fell in love with a poor but honest and kind man. Out of jealousy, others falsely accused him and plotted to punish him. Deeply distressed, Ba Den prayed to the deities for strength to save him.
Moved by her unwavering devotion, the gods granted her wish. Ba Den transformed into a radiant white tiger, shining with divine light, and saved the man. Out of loyalty and compassion, she chose to remain on the mountain to protect the land, support the virtuous, and dispel evil.
After her transformation, the people honoured her by building a temple and worshipping her as Ba Den, meaning “Lady of the Black Mountain.”
To this day, people visit Ba Pagoda to pray for health, peace, and happiness.
The legend of Ba Den reflects deep themes of loyalty, love, and justice. Today, she is venerated as Linh Son Thanh Mau Bodhisattva, a symbol of compassion and spiritual protection.
